This should clear things up for you. Serial # 00018422 would have been manufactured in 2000. Chart on the left is lever actions only. Chart on the right is ALL Marlins, beginning in 1968 thru 2000. Beyond that is out of range for the chart.
RBK PS: Chart did not print out as it was supposed to. Don't know why, but it didn't. However the 0 at the beginning of the serial number would indicate the year 2000. (22 caliber bolt action & semi-autos were not serial numbered prior to 1969) Firearm serial numbers were date coded by a prefix within the s/n, as signified below. With all the owners changes of gun mfgs recently, how does one learn the date of when the gun was made? Who does one call?
Sn: 00018422 max morgan sass 41265 I just input the SN without the leading zeros. The response was 'The year of manufacture for serial number 18422 is 1888.' Just for kicks, inputting 00018422 got a response, 'The year of manufacture for serial number 00018422 is 1888.' That was for the 1883-1906 made rifles. For the MARLINS MADE 1948 and LATER.
Inputting '18' (the first two digits of the SN) the response was 'The year of manufacture for 18 = 1982.' Don't know which date range is correct for your rifle? My 1800s made Marlins have the SN on the trigger guard plate (part #49) while the modern made ones are elsewhere. I just input the SN without the leading zeros.

Zeros are not place holders in a serial number. 2000 Phantom.
Marlin Model 336 and Models 39-A and 39-M manufactured from 1948 to 1968: nA one or two letter code was used to designate the year of manufacture. NAll Marlins (except lever action) manufactured from 1962-1968 nA two letter code was used to designate month and year of manufacture. NAll Marlins manufactured from 1969 to 1990: nThe first two digits of the serial number designate the year of manufacture, either as the last two digits of the year (in 1969-71) or as a number code (1971 and later). NGo to this website and enter the code found on your rifle.
The first 2 numbers of your serial number indicate when it wasmade. In this case your Marlin rifle was made in the year 1971.
NAll Marlin 30as models are modern guns, and as such have serial numbers. If your gun has had the serial number removed, it is in violation of BATF rules, and must be destroyed. Check the gun over closely, as you may have overlooked the serial number. They are either behind the hammer on the top tang, or under the lever on the bottom tang, behind the trigger.
NIf you can't find it in either of those locations, then remove the buttstock tang screw, and check the left side of the upper tang. It should also be there under the wood. This model was not made before 1983 and any firearms manufactured or sold in the US after 1968 must have the serial number plainly marked on the receiver.
It can be on the top, bottom, or either side.
